The need to be creative
started at an early age and I remember the day I decided to
become an art teacher. My class had just returned from a
field trip to the airport and our teacher asked us to draw a
picture of what we remembered the most. I drew a picture
of a plane in detail. The other kids in the class loved it and
asked me to show them how. Being the new kid in town and
finding it tough to make new friends, I remember thinking to
myself that this was a way to make new friends. I was
in fourth grade.
When It was time for college,
my parents wouldn't let me major in art. They had lived through
the depression, and wanted me to be able to support myself with
a "real" job. So I majored in English, but took
art courses whenever I could. In 1973 I earned a lifetime
teaching certificate in art through the California Community
College District.
I'm not hooked on just one
subject as many artists are, and I feel the same way about the
different mediums made available to artists today. While
graphite is perhaps my first and best love, I also draw with
colored pencils and paint in oil, acrylic and pastels. The
subject usually tells me which medium will work best so if it
doesn't work in one medium, I'll just start over in another.
